Here at Blue Light 4 Change, we have experienced some of the most horrendous stories of victimisation, abuse of power and poor decision making in the British Police Service.
Once described as a “Police Family”, it is sadly no longer the case. In this section of our site, you can watch interviews with former and current serving officers (identities fully protected), who have been victims of what are called Professional Standards Departments. Staffed by Police Officers and civilians, these units exist to “Police The Police”.
They are supposed to uphold the strict standards of the Police, root out corrupt officers from the service and investigate wrong-doing. However, we have uncovered story upon story of badly conducted investigations into officers, abuse of Policing regulations, the rules THE POLICE THEMSELVES lay down and the sacking of officers when there is simply no need for this most punitive measure.
It now begs the sad question, “SHOULD THE POLICE BE ABLE TO INVESTIGATE THEIR OWN?”
The recent legal ruling in R V Di Maria which removed the Polices’ power to sack officers who they deemed hadn’t cleared their strict “vetting” standards is we say, the courts standing up for officers who are being un-fairly victimised by the very service that should be thankful for the daily sacrifice they make for this nation.
All too often, it is the officer fighting against “the big machine” with all the legal protection “the Police” can muster – when the officer targeted, has none of that privilege unless they get themselves and more importantly, their families, into massive debt.
